On Buffon Machines and Numbers
The well-know needle experiment of Buffon can be regarded as an analog (i.e.,
continuous) device that stochastically "computes" the number 2/pi ~ 0.63661,
which is the experiment's probability of success. Generalizing the experiment
and simplifying the computational framework, we consider probability
distributions, which can be produced perfectly, from a discrete source of
unbiased coin flips. We describe and analyse a few simple Buffon machines that
generate geometric, Poisson, and logarithmic-series distributions. We provide
human-accessible Buffon machines, which require a dozen coin flips or less, on
average, and produce experiments whose probabilities of success are expressible
in terms of numbers such as, exp(-1), log 2, sqrt(3), cos(1/4), aeta(5).
Generally, we develop a collection of constructions based on simple
probabilistic mechanisms that enable one to design Buffon experiments involving
compositions of exponentials and logarithms, polylogarithms, direct and inverse
trigonometric functions, algebraic and hypergeometric functions, as well as
functions defined by integrals, such as the Gaussian error function.Comment: Largely revised version with references and figures added. 12 pages.

Algorithms for Combinatorial Systems: Well-Founded Systems and Newton Iterations
We consider systems of recursively defined combinatorial structures. We give
algorithms checking that these systems are well founded, computing generating
series and providing numerical values. Our framework is an articulation of the
constructible classes of Flajolet and Sedgewick with Joyal's species theory. We
extend the implicit species theorem to structures of size zero. A quadratic
iterative Newton method is shown to solve well-founded systems combinatorially.
From there, truncations of the corresponding generating series are obtained in
quasi-optimal complexity. This iteration transfers to a numerical scheme that
converges unconditionally to the values of the generating series inside their
disk of convergence. These results provide important subroutines in random
generation. Finally, the approach is extended to combinatorial differential

Performance Degradation and Cost Impact Evaluation of Privacy Preserving Mechanisms in Big Data Systems
Big Data is an emerging area and concerns managing datasets whose size is beyond commonly used software tools ability to capture, process, and perform analyses in a timely way. The Big Data software market is growing at 32% compound annual rate, almost four times more than the whole ICT market, and the quantity of data to be analyzed is expected to double every two years.
Security and privacy are becoming very urgent Big Data aspects that need to be tackled. Indeed, users share more and more personal data and user-generated content through their mobile devices and computers to social networks and cloud services, losing data and content control with a serious impact on their own privacy. Privacy is one area that had a serious debate recently, and many governments require data providers and companies to protect users’ sensitive data. To mitigate these problems, many solutions have been developed to provide data privacy but, unfortunately, they introduce some computational overhead when data is processed.
The goal of this paper is to quantitatively evaluate the performance and cost impact of multiple privacy protection mechanisms. A real industry case study concerning tax fraud detection has been considered. Many experiments have been performed to analyze the performance degradation and additional cost (required to provide a given service level) for running applications in a cloud system
The STRIP instrument of the Large Scale Polarization Explorer: microwave eyes to map the Galactic polarized foregrounds
In this paper we discuss the latest developments of the STRIP instrument of
the "Large Scale Polarization Explorer" (LSPE) experiment. LSPE is a novel
project that combines ground-based (STRIP) and balloon-borne (SWIPE)
polarization measurements of the microwave sky on large angular scales to
attempt a detection of the "B-modes" of the Cosmic Microwave Background
polarization. STRIP will observe approximately 25% of the Northern sky from the
"Observatorio del Teide" in Tenerife, using an array of forty-nine coherent
polarimeters at 43 GHz, coupled to a 1.5 m fully rotating crossed-Dragone
telescope. A second frequency channel with six-elements at 95 GHz will be
exploited as an atmospheric monitor. At present, most of the hardware of the
STRIP instrument has been developed and tested at sub-system level.
System-level characterization, starting in July 2018, will lead STRIP to be
shipped and installed at the observation site within the end of the year. The
on-site verification and calibration of the whole instrument will prepare STRIP

Non-pegylated liposomal doxorubicin in older adjuvant early breast cancer patients: cardiac safety analysis and final results of the COLTONE study
Aims: To explore the cardiac safety of adjuvant Non-Pegylated Liposomal Doxorubicin (NPL-DOX) plus Cyclophosphamide (CTX) followed by weekly Paclitaxel, in elderly women (≥ 65 years) with high-risk breast cancer. Previously, we described no symptomatic cardiac events within the first 12 months from starting treatment. We now reported the updated results after a median follow-up 76 months. Methods: The cardiac activity was evaluated with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) echocardiograms assessments, before starting chemotherapy and every 6 months, until 30 months from baseline, then yearly for at least 5 years. Results: Forty-seven women were recruited by two Units of Medical Oncology (Ethics Committee authorization CESM-AOUP, 3203/2011; EudraCT identification number: 2010-024067-41, for Pisa and Pontedera Hospitals). An episode of grade 3 CHF (NCI-CTCAE, version 3.0) occurred after 18 months the beginning of chemotherapy. The echocardiograms assessments were performed comparing the LVEF values of each patient evaluated at fixed period of time, compared to baseline. We observed a slight changed in terms of mean values at 48, 60, 72 and 84 months. At these time points, a statistically significant reduction of - 3.2%, - 4.6%, - 6.4% and - 7.1%, respectively, was observed. However, LVEF remained above 50% without translation in any relevant clinical signs. No other cardiac significant episodes were reported. To this analysis, in 13 patients (28%) occurred disease relapse and, of them, 11 (23%) died due to metastatic disease. Eight patients died of cancer-unrelated causes. Conclusions: The combination including NPL-DOX in elderly patients revealed low rate of cardiac toxic effects. Comparative trials are encouraged

Changes in renal function after nephroureterectomy for upper urinary tract carcinoma: analysis of a large multicenter cohort (Radical Nephroureterectomy Outcomes (RaNeO) Research Consortium)
Purpose To investigate prevalence and predictors of renal function variation in a multicenter cohort treated with radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Methods Patients from 17 tertiary centers were included. Renal function variation was evaluated at postoperative day (POD)-1, 6 and 12 months. Timepoints differences were Delta 1 = POD-1 eGFR - baseline eGFR; Delta 2 = 6 months eGFR - POD-1 eGFR; Delta 3 = 12 months eGFR - 6 months eGFR. We defined POD-1 acute kidney injury (AKI) as an increase in serum creatinine by >= 0.3 mg/dl or a 1.5 1.9-fold from baseline. Additionally, a cutoff of 60 ml/min in eGFR was considered to define renal function decline at 6 and 12 months. Logistic regression (LR) and linear mixed (LM) models were used to evaluate the association between clinical factors and eGFR decline and their interaction with follow-up. Results A total of 576 were included, of these 409(71.0%) and 403(70.0%) had an eGFR < 60 ml/min at 6 and 12 months, respectively, and 239(41.5%) developed POD-1 AKI. In multivariable LR analysis, age (Odds Ratio, OR 1.05, p < 0.001), male gender (OR 0.44, p = 0.003), POD-1 AKI (OR 2.88, p < 0.001) and preoperative eGFR < 60 ml/min (OR 7.58, p < 0.001) were predictors of renal function decline at 6 months. Age (OR 1.06, p < 0.001), coronary artery disease (OR 2.68, p = 0.007), POD-1 AKI (OR 1.83, p = 0.02), and preoperative eGFR < 60 ml/min (OR 7.80, p < 0.001) were predictors of renal function decline at 12 months. In LM models, age (p = 0.019), hydronephrosis (p < 0.001), POD-1 AKI (p < 0.001) and pT-stage (p = 0.001) influenced renal function variation (ss 9.2 +/- 0.7, p < 0.001) during follow-up. Conclusion Age, preoperative eGFR and POD-1 AKI are independent predictors of 6 and 12 months renal function decline after RNU for UTUC

C. elegans expressing D76N β 2 -microglobulin: a model for in vivo screening of drug candidates targeting amyloidosis
Funder: Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca Dipartimenti di Eccellenza 2018-2022 grant to the Molecular Medicine Department (University of Pavia)Abstract: The availability of a genetic model organism with which to study key molecular events underlying amyloidogenesis is crucial for elucidating the mechanism of the disease and the exploration of new therapeutic avenues. The natural human variant of β2-microglobulin (D76N β2-m) is associated with a fatal familial form of systemic amyloidosis. Hitherto, no animal model has been available for studying in vivo the pathogenicity of this protein. We have established a transgenic C. elegans line, expressing the human D76N β2-m variant. Using the INVertebrate Automated Phenotyping Platform (INVAPP) and the algorithm Paragon, we were able to detect growth and motility impairment in D76N β2-m expressing worms. We also demonstrated the specificity of the β2-m variant in determining the pathological phenotype by rescuing the wild type phenotype when β2-m expression was inhibited by RNA interference (RNAi). Using this model, we have confirmed the efficacy of doxycycline, an inhibitor of the aggregation of amyloidogenic proteins, in rescuing the phenotype. In future, this C. elegans model, in conjunction with the INVAPP/Paragon system, offers the prospect of high-throughput chemical screening in the search for new drug candidates
